What Is Sell-Through Rate (And Why Price Alone Lies)

Short answer

Sell-through rate is the percentage of listings for an item that actually sold within a time window. Across the half a million eBay sold-comp sets ThriftAI has collected, the average is 45%, so a 45% sell-through means roughly nine of every twenty listed examples found a buyer. Price tells you what an item could fetch; sell-through tells you whether it sells at all, and an expensive item with low sell-through is money parked on a shelf, not profit.

Every reseller learns the same lesson twice: once cheaply, from an article like this, and once expensively, from a $60 item that sat unsold for eight months. The difference between the two is sell-through rate.

The definition

Sell-through rate is the share of listings for an item that resulted in a sale within a given window. If 100 examples were listed over the last 90 days and 45 of them sold, the sell-through rate is 45%.

It is not the same as sales volume, and it is emphatically not the same as price. An item can have a high average sold price and a terrible sell-through: that combination describes most of the mistakes in a beginner's storage unit.

What counts as a good number

There is no universal threshold, because it depends on your capital, your storage and how fast you need to recycle cash. As working rules of thumb:

  • Under 20%: slow. Only worth it on high-margin items you are happy to hold, and only if you have the space.
  • 30–50%: healthy, and where the majority of everyday thrift inventory sits.
  • Over 60%: fast-moving. Often lower margin, but the cash comes back quickly, which matters more than most new resellers think.

Across every category ThriftAI tracks, the average sell-through is 45%. That is a useful baseline: an item materially below it needs a materially better margin to justify the shelf space.

Sell-through by category

The table below is measured across half a million eBay sold-comp result sets collected through ThriftAI, limited to categories with at least 1,000 scans so the numbers mean something. “Scans” is our sample size, not a measure of the market.

Two things stand out. First, the spread is narrower than folklore suggests: most categories cluster between 42% and 46%, so category alone is a weak signal. Second, books sit at the bottom at 38%, several points below everything else, which is worth knowing before you fill a tote with them.

How to actually use it

Sell-through is a filter, not a target. The practical sequence at the shelf:

  • Check the sold price, never the asking price. They are different numbers and only one of them is real.
  • Check sell-through. Below 20%, you need a compelling margin and a reason to believe this example is better than the ones sitting unsold.
  • Check the spread. A wide price distribution usually means condition or variant matters enormously. Figure out which one you are holding.
  • Then do the margin against your actual buy price, including fees and shipping.

Where to see it

ThriftAI returns a sell-through percentage on every eBay-backed scan, alongside the sold count, the active count, the price distribution and the window the data covers. Point the camera at an item, no barcode needed, and the number is there before you have decided whether to get in line.

Questions people ask

What is a good sell-through rate for reselling?

Most everyday thrift inventory sits between 30% and 50%. Under 20% is slow and needs a strong margin to justify; over 60% moves quickly, often at lower margin. The average across all categories ThriftAI tracks is 45%.

How is sell-through rate calculated?

It is the number of listings that sold divided by the total number of listings (sold plus unsold) in a time window, expressed as a percentage. ThriftAI calculates it from eBay sold listings rather than active asking prices.

Which thrift category has the worst sell-through?

Of the categories with a meaningful sample, books are the weakest at 38%, several points below every other category and well under the 45% overall average.
